In a time where many of us are conducting business online, we think it’s important to put a face to a name. Our Staff Spotlight series will give you a little insight into the lives of our Nicholsons colleagues. Let’s find out a bit more about Partner, Troy Hawthorn.

What does your job entail?

I resolve disputes and give advice.

Who or what inspired you to pursue the career you have today?

No one or thing in particular. When I started practicing in 1993 I liked and was predisposed to this area of the law, in preference to others which I was exposed to as part of my articles.

What’s the best part of your job?

Being creative. I know that might sound counterintuitive in an adversarial arena regulated by Court rules and practices, however, there is plenty of scope to bring your own personality and style in what I do.

What is the best career lesson you’ve learned so far?

Whenever you think you’re going to win, look again. You may have missed something important.

What’s your greatest career achievement?

I’ve been fairly lucky to be recognised by Doyles on a number of occasions as a leading practitioner in my areas of practice – litigation and insolvency.

How would you describe your job to a class of kindergartners?

I help people with the business problems.

What’s something that most people don’t know about you?

I’m a classically trained violinist. Had I not studied law, I was seriously considering studying Music at university.

What’s something you’re planning on doing in the next year that you’ve never done before?

My family and I are relocating to the Gold Coast for 2021 and 2022 for a sea change.

If you could visit any place in the world you’ve never been, where would you go?

Sicily. I love Italy and everything Italian, particularly the wine and food.

What do you like to do when you aren’t working?

Riding and racing my bike, and spending time with family and friends.

What is the one thing, you can’t live without?

Coffee. Scratch that, many coffees…
